Breast Reconstruction is performed to rebuild one or both breasts after a lumpectomy, mastectomy, or other trauma to the breasts. The breast reconstruction procedure may be performed using one of a couple different techniques. Breast implants may be used to rebuild the breast or a a flap technique may be used which utilizes tissue from another area of the patient’s body to rebuild the breast. The breast reconstruction procedure can be performed either at the same time as the mastectomy procedure, or some time afterwards.
Breast reconstruction may not be right for everyone. There is no one right way to move on after the loss of one or both breasts. The decision to opt for reconstruction is a personal one. For some women, the reconstruction allows them to feel more like themselves and more confident in their bodies.
